The Pittsburgh Power are a franchise primarily recognized by the Arena Football Team. They debuted in the AFL in 2011 after being formed in part by former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann in 2010. The team folded after the 2014 season, off the heels of their first winning record.
Debuting in the AFL (2011)[]
With any new expansion team, expectations weren't very high for the Power during its debut season. These feelings either vanished or were reaffirmed after the Power lost to its divisional rival Philadelphia Soul in a game that was played into overtime. Expectations were raised when the Power pulled off a two game winning streak against the Iowa Barnstormers and Milwaukee Mustangs, only to lower once again after Pittsburgh put up a measly twenty points against the Tulsa Talons. The team lost again to the up-start Jacksonville Sharks the following week, putting their record at 2-3. Something sparked in the Pittsburgh team after losing to the Sharks as they went 4-1 in the next few weeks, putting them in the playoff race midway through the season with a record of 6-4. The spark eventually vanished as the Power went 1-2 the next few weeks, including a devastating 40-81 loss to the Utah Blaze. The struggles continued as the Power suffered a three game losing streak late in the regular season, putting them at 8-9. They would go on to win their final game against a struggling Philadelphia Soul team, putting their overall record for the 2011 regular season at 9-9. They did not make the playoffs.
Power Struggles (2012)[]
With a decent debut season, the Power had decided not to re-sign the oft-injured Bernard Morris at starting quarterback. With the 2012 season ahead, the Power looked to improve upon their offensive standpoint. To begin the season, the Power pulled off a win against the Orlando Predators. From then on, their struggles began to unfold. Pittsburgh would go on to lose three-straight games heading into week five. Their next win came against the same opponent they defeated last time, the Orlando Predators, in an overtime thriller. The Power then slid down the division by losing six games in a row, including three games decided by six points or less. During this stretch, Pittsburgh fired head coach Chris Siegfried and brought in former New Orleans VooDoo head coach Derek Stingley to take over the Power. In a bizarre twist, the Power's first win under Stingley resulted in a forfeit by the Cleveland Gladiators as not enough players reported to the Cleveland sideline to compete in a fair match-up, bringing the Power's record to 3-9. The Power finished off the rest of the regular season with a 2-4 record, bringing the overall record for the 2012 regular season to a 5-13.
