The Columbus Destroyers is a franchise primarily recognized by the Arena Football League. The team made its debut in the AFL in 1999 as the Buffalo Destroyers and was made in part due to tension concerning an expiring lease that could have forced the NFL's Buffalo Bills to relocate or fold. Neither possibility came to fruition, and the Destroyers debuted with an ice-cold streak, their first season ending with a 1-13 record. They would play four more seasons before relocating to Columbus, Ohio, renaming the city part of the team's title accordingly. The Destroyers would fold upon the decision by the AFL to cease operations for the 2009 season.
On February 22nd, 2019, the Arena Football League announced in a live press conference that the Columbus Destroyers would return to the league after ten-plus years of inactivity.
