The Atlantic City Blackjacks is an arena football franchise primarily recognized by the Arena Football League. The team was announced during the 2018 offseason in the 2019 calendar year. The team's operating management group, Trifecta Sports and Entertainment, is the same as that of the Philadelphia Soul and Albany Empire.
On March 7th, 2019, a press conference was held where the Blackjacks' name was announced for the team, along with the team logo and colors. The Blackjacks name is reminiscent of New Jersey's recent bill being passed to allow sports betting within the state.
Black and Red Debut (2019-Present)[]
The Atlantic City Blackjacks opened the 2019 season with high hopes. Established players throughout their AFL careers such as Randy Hippeard, Arthur Hobbs, Willie McGinnis, and Raymond McNeil were among those starting for the team as the season opened. Their first test started with the Philadelphia Soul, a match the Blackjacks lost by a single score, 41-48. Their first win came in Week Two against the newly revived Columbus Destroyers, 42-35. From that point, the Blackjacks' success would waver back and forth for the next five weeks, winning one game, then losing the next, and so forth. By the end of Week Seven, their win-loss total for the season was at 3-4. The following week, with their second match against the Philadelphia Soul, starting quarterback Randy Hippeard suffered an injury during the game that would force him out for the rest of the season. Warren Smith was tasked to lead the team afterwards. With a losing effort against the Albany Empire in Week Nine, the Blackjacks put up a season-high 61 points with Warren Smith under center; the next week, they improved on it, putting up 70 points in a blowout victory against the Washington Valor. They would lose the last two games of the season, putting their regular season record for their first year at 4-8, missing the playoffs in the process.
